What is a Teardrop?

The Teardrop is a compact travel trailer consisting of a sleeping/eating cabin and a fully functional kitchen compartment.  The Teardrop gets its name from its streamlined design.  These mini-RVs were first introduced in the 1930s and became popular right after WW II.  A Teardrop can comfortably sleep 2 people.  There is also an optional drop-down dinette inside the cabin. The kitchen is accessed from the rear of the trailer where there is room for an ice chest, stove, sink and other kitchen necessities.  With minimal setup required, the kitchen works especially well for a quick meal at a roadside rest area, a tailgate party at a sporting event or as a "chuckwagon" at a campout.  The Teardrop's streamlined shape, small size and light weight allow for easy trailering on even the smallest cars...like a VW Bug or PT Cruiser!

Want to build one?
I've purchased plans from Phil Ennis of Desert Teardrops and will start building the "Combo Teardrop" (shown at left) for our family in October 2004.  I'm looking for other folks in Fredericksburg who are interested in building teardrops for their families.  I believe establishing a "teardrop cooperative" where we can work together to build our campers will be more enjoyable than working alone.  We'll share time, tools and techniques to complete our Teardrops by Spring 2005.  Afterwards, we can organize roadtrips to use these great little RVs in the wide-open spaces of Texas and help others to build one.  If you're interested in working together, email me at the address below and I'll set up a meeting so we can talk Teardrop.
